Seigi Nakata (中田 正義, Nakata Seigi?), is one of the two protagonists of The Case Files of Jeweler Richard series.
At the start of the story, he is a second-year business student at Kasaba University located in Tokyo. He also currently lives alone in Takadanobaba.
He somewhat dreams of becoming a government official in the future. To let his mother rest easy, he was working part time at a television station until he met Richard.
He works at Jewelry Étranger under Richard Ranasinghe de Vulpian.

Seigi's full body
Seigi has black hair that has bangs swept to the right side and brown eyes.
He has said that before working with Richard, he only cared about his clothes being clean enough and didn't pay much attention to style or fashion. After he started working at the jewelry store, he usually checks that his attire is not too casual.[1]
As the series progresses, he changes his hairstyle to sweep part his hair on the right and updates his wardrobe to include more formal business wear befitting his new jobs.
He is also a fan of wearing sarongs when he is in Sri Lanka.
Personality[]
Seigi is strongly committed to justice and doing the right thing, even though it has gotten him teased in the past. His grandmother instilled a strong sense of right and wrong in him and he wants to live up to that.
He is quite clever even as he's not very introspective in the beginning of the series and quickly learns how to deal with Richard. Additionally, he gets very good grades in school and picks up languages quickly under Richard's tutelage.
He is very friendly and extroverted. He gets lonely easily and has many friends, although not many close ones. He gets very upset when he cannot communicate himself and who he is with others.
Seigi also has PTSD regarding his abusive biological father and his stalking, and undergoes anger management therapy to get a hold on the mental health effects it causes him. The results are of mixed success and his suicidal tendencies linger into Volume 10. He is terrified of entering a close romantic relationship after having read many books as a child on the statistics of male domestic violence survivors becoming abusers themselves and also has to work through this fear.
Abilities[]
- Karate Black Belt: Seigi practiced martial arts in his childhood, thanks to his mother enrolling him to find an outlet for his anger issues. When he started college, he dropped his training classes to concentrate on his studies, but he keeps fit by exercising before bed and helping at his dojo. Thanks to his training, he has a good self-defense technique and is not afraid to use force if the situation calls for it.
Etymology[]
- The name Seigi means "justice/hero of justice, right/rightness/righteous/righteousness, correct meaning" (正義).
- Seigi's surname Nakata means "middle" (中) (naka) and "field, rice paddy" (田) (ta).

- The surname Yamada means "mountain, hill" (山) (yama) and "field, rice paddy" (田) (ta/da).
Trivia[]
- He loves all animals, especially dogs and cats.[2]
- His class trips in middle and high school were to Kyoto and Nara.
- His mother originally didn't have much give to cook, and his grandmother had a poor person's taste in food. Thus, cooking became a survival skill for him.
- Seigi's specialty is pudding.
- His favorite colors are pink and orange.
- Since his childhood, he often calls his mother by her first name.[3]
- He has stated countless times that for him, the most beautiful person in the world is Richard.
- After listening to an opera radio for a few months, Seigi became a big opera fan. Maria Callas is one of his favorite singers.[1]
- When he moved to Sri Lanka, he adopted two mixed breed stray dogs named Jiro and Saburo. He currently takes care of them together with Richard.[4]
- He runs a blog in English by the name of "Iggy" where he posts about his time in Sri Lanka as an apprentice jeweler, things he learns there, his culture shocks and dessert recipes he likes from the country. It was created on Richard's recommendation for him to improve his language skills.
- Currently, Seigi can speak Japanese, English, and Sinhala, as well as some French, Spanish, and Mandarin.
